With profound sadness, we share the news that Ananda Lewis—the vibrant MTV VJ-turned-activist and healing advocate—has passed away at 52 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her sister, Lakshmi, announced on Facebook on June 11, 2025, saying, “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms. Lord, rest her soul”
A journey of courage and transformation
- Ananda’s breast cancer journey began with a Stage III diagnosis in October 2020. Choosing holistic, natural treatments over conventional interventions, she later shared heartfelt regret that she hadn’t pursued a double mastectomy sooner.
- In 2024, following her cancer’s progression to Stage IV, she bravely reflected: “I wish I could go back… it’s important for me to admit where I went wrong”. This honesty sparked national conversations on early detection.
From MTV stardom to soulful advocacy
Born March 21, 1973, in San Diego, Ananda became a guiding light on BET’s Teen Summit and later on MTV’s Total Request Live and Hot Zone, shaping youth culture beginning in 1997. In 2001, she launched her own daytime talk show before moving into roles like The Insider correspondent and TLC/Celebrity Mole appearances.
Above all, Ananda became a passionate advocate—urging women to prioritize self-exams and mammograms, emphasizing that “prevention is the real cure”
A legacy of light and renewal
Her passing reminds us of life’s fragility and resilience. Though she is gone, her spirit lives on—in conversations that encourage early screening, in healing circles, and within countless hearts she touched.
Ananda leaves behind her beloved son, Langston (b. 2011), and her sister Lakshmi .
