Women make up approximately $218 trillion in Global spending where they spend over $150 billion annually. Not only do women make up the majority of the economy’s spending but from the years of 2015 to 2016, women entrepreneurship rates increased by double that of their male counterparts.
In the United States, not only do women own 11.3 million businesses, nearly 36 percent of all businesses are owned by women, which is an increase from 2017. Although those numbers are impressive, women are still dominated by men in the media industry.
According to the Women’s Media Center, in 2017 men produced 62.3 percent of news reports at 20 of the nation’s top news outlets while women produced 37.7 percent of news reports. Additionally, in the broadcast news sector alone, work by women anchors, field reporters and correspondents actually declined, falling to 25.2 percent of reports in 2016 from 32 percent when the WMC published its 2015 “Divided” report.
After seeing the above mentioned statistics, this is why it is critical for women to own their voice more than ever and Spelman College alumna, Danielle Jeter is ensuring that women are made aware of this through her organization and annual conference, Women In Media (WIM).
On Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16, WIM will be holding its 6th Annual Women in Media Conference in Philadelphia where they have several interactive activities and speakers that will be dropping knowledge to our women.
