Meagan Good, La’Myia Good, Chike Okonkwo Chat Mental Health Film

Mental health affects all aspects of our lives, sometimes without us even realizing it. From our careers, family life, and relationships. The thing is though, mental health is constantly being kicked under the rug in the Black community. However, more conversations surrounding it are starting to surface slowly but surely.

This weekend, on Saturday, February 13, Death Saved My Life will be premiering on Lifetime and it is definitely the perfect film to be released on Valentine’s weekend. While most think of Valentine’s Day as love, it is also a holiday when the issue of domestic abuse gets masked due to the overflow of “love”.

Death Saved My Life features Meagan Good, La’Myia Good, and Chike Okonkwo. It goes into the life of Jade (Meagan Good) who has it all, a successful marketing career, a husband admired and respected in the community, and a young daughter they both dote on. But behind closed doors, her life is far from idyllic. Her husband Ed (Chiké Okonkwo) is a controlling man who is physically and psychologically abusive. When Jade decides to leave Ed, he tells her “If I can’t have you, nobody will,” a threat which becomes very real when she discovers he has hired someone to kill her. Knowing no one will believe her, Jade realizes the only way to escape Ed is to make him believe the hitman completed the job and that she is dead.

La’Myia Good plays Jade’s sister Leigh. Death Saved My Life is produced by Jarrett Creative. Executive producers are Julie Insogna Jarrett, Seth Jarrett and Meagan Good. Seth Jarrett directs from a script written by Barbara Kymlicka. In a recent press conference, Meagan Good, La’Myia Good and Chike Okonkwo chatted on the film, domestic abuse, and mental health. Below are a few key points on why this issue is critical within our community.

Each character struggles with some sort of internal struggle. What made you guys want to portray these characters?

Fox 5 asked Meagan Good what made her pick up this role being that it is a role that is different from other roles that she has done in the past?

Tea with Tia asked Meagan about how this film can help shed light on mental health and open that dialogue amongst our community and in Hollywood.

Ty Cole with Your Voice Magazine asked Meagan Good and opened it up to the rest of the cast on how she is able to control her own narrative when Hollywood tries to control everything.
